I thought I would finally share with you the details of my cookie exchange party that I hosted exactly a week ago from today
The party was such a great time and we already talked about how to top it next year, so it’s basically already established that this will be an annual event. Next year we will have more space (in our new house) so I plan on extending it out to my female family members and maybe having some of the girls bring their moms along too! I already can’t wait, if you can’t tell!
The Snacks
- spinach dip with whole wheat bread, celery, carrots
- pretzels and spicy mustard
- salsa, whole grain flax tortilla chips, triscuits
- my friend Tara’s homemade banana snack cake

The Meal
- crockpot vegetarian chili (recipe here)

The Games
- Christmas Right-Left Game
- We played this game for our ornament exchange. I had each of the girls bring a $5 ornament to exchange since we are all starting out with our ornament collection and don’t have too many “special” ones to put on our tree since our parents dont want to give ours up ha!

- Cookie Match-up
- I made up a list for each of the girls with everyone’s name on it and distributed it. Then I had each of the girls go around and say what cookie they made. Then I explained the game to the girls (so it wouldnt be fresh in their mind!) and told them they had to write the cookie that each girl brought next to their name. The girl with the most right won a prize (an ornament) that I had for them. Kelly was the winner who had all of them right!

- Most Appealing Cookie
- We basically voted on the cookie that we would be the most inclined to grab first. The winner? Megan’s Cocoa Peanut Butter Chip. She won an ornament as a prize.
- Best Tasting Cookie
- Pretty self explanatory, but we voted on the cookie that tasted the best! We each took a little nibble of each of our cookies to base our vote on. The winner? Tara’s Cream Cheese Cookie. She won an ornament as a prize.
The Cookies
I had all of the girls place their cookies on my kitchen table until everyone arrived. Then, we each took Christmas-themed plastic bags and placed 12 cookies in each bag for everyone to have. I think next year, to avoid the mess, I will have everyone bring their cookies wrapped individually already and keep a few extra out for tasting!
Here’s all of the cookies before packaging. I personally like Amber’s cookies (wrapped in foil) which have “DO NOT EAT” written on them as a note to her fiance. However, he crossed the NOT out!

The Cookie Details
Tara’s Cream Cheese Cookie

Kelly’s Oatmeal Raisin Cookie

Jill’s Rum Balls – super strong! I gave these to my brother who is a college sophomore – enough said!

Lindsay’s (yes, me) Pecan Balls

Anna’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip

Megan’s Cocoa Peanut Butter Chip

Meghan’s Peanut Butter Caramel Blossoms

Danielle’s Pizzelles

So that everyone would have the recipes for these cookies, should they choose to make their own, I made up a recipe booklet for the girls that contained all of the recipes:

Our Christmas Decorations
Our Advent Calendar – I hope to get a nicer one next year but this did the job! Basically, you can each “character” out of the pocket for the designated day and place it in the “scene”. It’s been fun to create the scene thus far!

Our Christmas Tree

Closeup of some of my “fun” ornaments… like the baker? I received that last year! The Santa is from Jamaica on our honeymoon!

I loved this starfish which was a pew decoration from our wedding so I turned it into an ornament

In the middle of the night last night, I heard something fall and I panicked and woke Bill up and was saddened to find this:

Personally, I think Bill was in on it
Seems ironic considering last night he was making some not-so-nice comments about all the ballerinas on the tree! I was a ballet dancer growing up so that is why i have such a collection
However, Bill, not to worry, it’s nothing that superglue can’t fix!
Hope you enjoyed my little christmas cookie exchange party recap
If you want any of the recipes, feel free to email me at loveofoats@gmail.com!
I’ll leave you with our homemade christmas stockings that will soon be filled with gifts from “Santa“!

Lindsey,
Thanks so much for your advice and for the long answer! I’ll definitely take these tips into consideration (and use) and will update you as things progress and I hopefully don’t lose my mind!

Lovely party! Everything looked amazing.
This is my first time commenting, although I have been reading for several months. I wanted to ask your advice, as well as that of your readers.
I am in a similar situation as you were. I am 24, in school for my MBA and will be getting married in 9 months. So my question is: How did you do it all? I am slowly burning out with a demanding job, 1.5 hours of commute each way, and school every week on top of wedding planning. With finals and 5 papers (yes, for 2 classes!) I have not been able to maintain a regular gym schedule, though my eating has been very clean. I have actually lost weight, but my concern is overall health. How did you schedule everything? What were your work and school hours? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
I really enjoy your blog- keep up the good work!
Hi Yelena! Wow – we definitely are very similar! Let’s see, I guess the best way to answer this question would be to write out what a typical day was like for me pre-marriage… Honestly, I was at the point of burn-out most days and some days I am close to it now too (since my school-time has now been occupied w/ house-hunting stuff AND just adjusting to life as a newlywed), so I won’t say it’s easy but you can find a happy medium so don’t worry
My day would start at 5:15am when I got up, got ready for work, ate breakfast, etc. I’d leave around 5:50 to get to work around 6:45am… I’d work until 4:30 (spend my lunchtime, if I got to take a lunch, doing hw) and get home around 5:20′ish… luckily I lived at home during this time, so my mom would have dinner cooked and I would eat from 5:30-6, get changed really quick, and head to the gym at around 6:45, workout until 7:45… shower, pack my lunch for the next day, work on any hw I had to do, talk to my fiance (at the time), blog quickly and then go to bed by 10′ish! On nights I had school, I would have the same schedule through until about 5:20 except I would head to school at that point to prepare for my 6:15pm class… Class went until 9:15pm and I’d head home, pack my lunch, and head to bed hopefully around 10! I tried to spend all weekends doing homework so that way I’d have an easier work week… I had class two nights a week… Wedding planning was really stressful for me… I loved every minute of it, but I also dreaded it and I really tried to do all big wedding planning on weekends… As you can see my weekends were never really relaxing it’s where I fit everything ELSE in
Now that school is over (temporarily – I am taking a few courses for work through a university in April), my typical day begins at 5:15 still, I still work 6:45′ish to about 4:15… I get to the gym at 5 and get changed in time for 5:30 spin or cardio and I leave the gym at 6:30… head home, shower, and start dinner at 6:45… then we usually eat around 7:15… I pack lunches for my husband and me, talk to my mom on the phone, blog, and then watch tv from around 9-10 with my husband and relax and go to bed around 10…
I think my best tips would be to schedule out each day for what HAS to be done, what is DOABLE, and what is not and then learning to deal with what is a priority and what isn’t. Going to the gym everyday is not absolutely necessary but if I could get there 3-4 times a week, then I would be happy… Preparing a game plan for meals and snacks every Sunday also helped me out totally and saves me time… I prep a lot of my dinner food out the night before (grilling chicken before-hand, pre-cooking sweet potatoes or potatoes in the microwave beforehand, etc.)…
Sorry for rambling on but I hope this helps answer your question and also helps you schedule things out!!! Best of luck w/ school AND the wedding!
